Voters in Fauquier, Warren, and Rappahannock Counties need to understand that the balance of power in the General Assembly has shifted from the rural areas of the Commonwealth to the population centers; especially, Northern Virginia and the Tidewater area. Particularly in the House of Delegates, we need a competent spokesperson looking out for our interests, and that is why we have to elect Jay Katzen on Nov. 2.
The shift in voting strength is plain to see in the recent House votes on gun control legislation. Delegates from the rural counties have always been able to beat back any serious attempts to impose gun control. But during the last session of the General Assembly, Gov. Wilder proposed the one-gun-per-month bill, and in a revised version it passed, supported by a coalition of Republicans and Democrats from Northern Virginia and Tidewater. Whether this was good or bad is beside the point; it illustrates clearly the need for strong, self-reliant representation.
Jay Katzen is creative and articulate. From his foreign service experience he brings skills in diplomacy, negotiation and consensus-building. He has political experience at the federal and the state levels.
Mr. Wood hails from the goodol’-boy school of politics. His positions on issues with state-wide significance are determined by the Democratic leadership.
If the year were 1954, we wouldn’t expect anything better. In 1994, we need someone who can speak for us on issues such as land use. allocation of the state’s funding for public education, and crime prevention. Let’s get out and vote for Jav Katzen.
