Sperryville’s Maurice Herndon advises potential retirees to plan ahead for an active retirement and try to do something completely different from what they did during their regular working life.
He has taken his own advice. After a career working in and with the Federal government, he retired to Rappahannock County and a life producing crops from the land.
At 83 he is still going strong although his agricultural endeavors have gone from cattle, to orchards, to beekeeping, and all of those efforts have been surrendered.
Now he grows cut flowers, which his wife of 58 years, Jane Herndon, dries for the annual Dried Flower Sale at Trinity Church. He also continues to raise vegetables in his garden, but he switched from a large garden to a small one in raised beds.
