Julie Portman, Ki Theatre director and organizer of the concert, was equally pleased with this last in her “Exchange” series of programs this winter.
“John Jackson attracted a richly diverse audience, not only from his home county, but from as far as Clarke, Loudoun and Fairfax counties,” she said.
Jackson’s brother Freddie, who still lives on a farm in Rappahannock, joined Jackson on stage to tap dance. John Jackson, 70, explained that their love of music and dance came from their parents, who made music a part of their children’s everyday life.
Since leaving the county in the 1960s, John Jackson has developed a wide following on the folk-music circuit. He next heads to Ireland to perform.
The majority of the money raised for Spring Mountain came from bids on furniture and crafts donated by Mary Simmons, owner of the Rush River Gallery. One of her contributions, a huge cupboard made from oak, sold for $800. But other donations added thousands to the grand total, ranging from 360 eggs donated by Miriam Harris that sold for $1 a dozen, to a car in excellent running condition donated by Sally Walker that sold for $575.
