Superintendent Bill Wade announced a new organizational structure and personnel selections for Shenandoah National Park.
Superintendent Wade said “Our goal is (1) to provide for a more efficient organization, (2) to focus on the increasing demands of ecosystem managements, cultural resource managements and partnershipbuilding, and (3) to place resources and authority in locations near the places where services are most effectively and efficiently delivered. ”
Wade continued by saying, “We believe that in these tight fiscal and staffing times we must look at new ways of meeting the National Park Service mission at Shenandoah National Park.”
The new operating structure will center around the north, central and south districts of the Park. These units will concentrate on providing a greater emphasis on resource protection and visitor services, park headquarters will continue to provide the overall management of the Park and specialized support for the districts.
Larry Hakel has been named District Leader in the North District which consists of the area from Front Royal south to U.S. Highway 211. Mr. Hakel previously served as the Chief Ranger at Shenandoah National park, and as Superintendent of Petersburg National Battlefield.
Sandy Rives will become the District Leader in the South District which consists of the area from U.S. Highway 33 south to Afton Mountain and Interstate 64. Mr. Rives has been the Mangements Assistant at Shenandoah National Park and the Park’s public affairs person. Prior to coming to Shenandoah, Mr. Rives served as Acting Superintendent at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.
A permanent leader of the Central District has not been named. However, Bob Martin is currently serving as the Acting District
