Led by Coach Jean Lillard, and cheered on by parents, the Rappahannock County Junior Tennis Team won five out of eight matches played at Crooked Run Racquet & Fitness Club in Front Royal last Sunday afternoon.
At this point, the team has won the majority of its matches played so far.
The tournament consisted of 10game pro sets with regular scoring. Seven of the eight matches played were doubles.
The closest match was won by Willie Eastham and Van DeBergh 10-7.
Megan Fairbrother, playing with an arm cast, and Austin Bouffard won their match 10-6, as did Adam Bouffard paired up with Keirsten Kerr.
Keri Kerr and Laura McNear won a match 10-4, and Alex Baumgardner and Michael Fairbrother won by an identical score.
In the only singles match Calos Avelar lost 6-10.
Chris Sauce and Brian Evans were defeated 3-10, and Chris Kerr and Rob DeBergh lost 2-10.
Coach Lillard is very proud of her team. “They are having a lot of fun, and there is a lot of support from parents,” she said. The parents also help a lot with carpooling.
Coach Lillard has been involved with organizing tennis events and clinics for youths and adults in Rappahannock County for about 10 years. She coached high school tennis in Prince Georges County in Maryland prior to moving to Rappahannock.
There are presently 23 members on the junior tennis team who play on a regular basis.
This past weekend’s tournament was the third for this team. Their first one was played at the Culpeper Tennis Center, and the second one at Chestnut Forks Tennis Club in Warrenton. The Rappahannock team won the majority of matches in those tournaments.
The players participated in several clinics over the winter taught by Hunt Harris and Monroe Baisden. Beginning sometime in April, clinics will be taught by Mr. Harris at the Rappahannock County Park and will continue through the summer. There will also be singles and doubles tournaments held at the park over the summer..
Round robin tennis will be played at the park to establish the players’ seeding.
