In just his second try over timber, Edge Hill Squire made the most of a 10-pound weight allowance and a strong ride by professional jockey Patrick Cooney to win the novice timber feature at the April 9 Old Dominion Hounds Point-to-Point.
A capacity crowd of more than 3,000 poured into the Ben Venue Farm gates on a sunny Saturday. Racegoers were privy to some of the spring’s finest competition yet, with no less than 11 races taking place.
In the day’s feature, Edge Hill Squire had many obstacles to overcome before his owners accepted any silver, not the least of which were 18 imposing post and rails on the threemile Ben Venue oval. “It’s just his second start over timber,” said rider Cooney. “But he jumped super for a [youngster.]”
Held steady in the middle of the 13-horse pack early on, Edge Hill Squire moved into contention racing downhill to the second last fence. Front runner Big Boo Boo, Arch Kingsley Jr. up, was joined there by five others, including Warrenton winner Dumbarton Street, Peter Walsh up, and Edge Hill Squire. Experienced professionals Walsh and Cooney whipped and drove to the fence, with both fortunately meeting it in stride.
