in that role for two seasons during Washington’s Colonial Christmas, she added the role of the devil in “The Kings’ Play” this past December, a performance that caused this reviewer to comment, “She was bom to play that role.”
However, her nearly 20-minute monologue portraying a woman remembering her 13th birthday, which also brought the birth of her young brother Orville and the peed for her to deliver the calf Rupert, was indeed theater as high art.
Mrs. Abell also tried her hand as a director for “Open Theatre,” directing Kathleen Maier, Diana Morgan and Laura Crowe in a scene from Giradoux’s “The Madwoman of Chaillot,” a totally zany production.
“Open Theatre” played to packed houses both nights. Rappahannock County is fortunate that Ki Theatre’s artistic director Julie Portman provided this opportunity for members of the community to perform. If our luck holds out, this will be the first of many such weekends.
