On April 8-10 Becky Gallegos, Mark Jenkins, and Christy Keys represented Rappahannock County 4-H at the Virginia Council of Farmers Cooperative Youth Leadership Conference held at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria.
Approximately 70 other 4-H and FFA members attended the conference. Prior to the conference, one of the requirements to attend was for each participant to do an interview at local cooperative. Then each one wrote an essay on what they had learned from the visit. Each member was sponsored by a cooperative. These include, Rappahannock Farmers Cooperative, Culpeper Farmers Cooperative and Rappahannock Electric Cooperative.
The first day was filled with educational lectures, a 50 question truefalse test, and free recreation time.
On Saturday the teens learned to manage a cooperative. By using a computer simulation program, they could rapidly receive results allowing each one to theoretically see how much profit or loss they would make in one year. All teams got something out of this program. “Becky said all
