He said normally a juvenile is released to the custody of a parent, but the Commonwealth’s Attorney could seek to have the girl placed in detention if a place is available. He said in cases of murder or rape, the state has to provide a place in detention.
He noted that in surrounding counties there have been cases of juveniles brandishing weapons on school grounds. “Fortunately here so far everything is show and tell,” he said.
Elementary school Principal David Smith said reaction from students and parents to the incident has been “surprise and shock,” but he said, “Reaction to the note was positive. They appreciate our sending out the facts so everyone knows what’s going on and knows that no one is taking the issue lightly.”
