The only health problem strongly linked to sugar is tooth decay. Even here it is not the total amount of sugar that matters as much as when and how often sweets are eaten. Sweets frequently consumed between meals and those that cling readily to the teeth are more likely to promote decay. It’s especially important that teeth be brushed after each meal so that sweets don’t cling to you teeth.
Why, then, should we worry so much about sugar? First, a very large number of sweet calories can get packed into a very small amount of food, making it easy to eat too many calories before your hunger is satisfied. 1 Second, sugar is a false pick-meup that soon lets you down lower than yoti started out.
Third, at the same time that insulin processes blood, sugar, it also promotes that storage of fat. Thus, .every time you eat foods that require a large outpouring of insulin, you fatten yourself up a little bit. So sweet snacks between meals add more than just their caloric contribution.
Fourth, it’s easy to get hooked on the sweet taste. The more some people have of sweets, the more they want.
Finally, while sugar is not a direct cause of killer diseases, it can be -a health hazard of people already afflicted. For example, 10 million people with diabetes cannot safely consume large amounts of sugar without jeopardizing control of their disease.
