Foundations” is being 'taught this year. This is supposed to be the first class in a three-class sequence that will qualify as a vocational completion course for high school graduates. Technology education teacher Ron Vickers said next year he plans to offer ‘Technology Transfer” and the following year ‘Technology Assesment” to complete the three-year “Design and Technology” program.
“When I got out of Virginia Tech in 1980, I was pretty much a woodworking teacher,” Mr. Vickers said. “Now I teach on computers half the day. We have to change with the times.” He took a class in Fredericksburg and learned about the Design and Technology program.
To prepare for teaching Technology Foundations this year, Mr. Vickers got $200 to buy lumber and over the summer partitioned off a section of the shop room for computer use. More materials will be needed to make the area fully useful, but for now, Mr. Vickers intends to use it in the class. He said he will use 1 sheets of plastic as a ceiling and for windows until more permanent materials can be purchased to make the area dust free for computer use. i Students will be able to go back and forth from using computers to design projects, do research or keep track of data to using the other machines in the shop to complete projects.
