GATT

To the Editor:

American stands to lose much of its prized national and local independence if Congress adopts the latest GATT international trade agreement this fall, which would established a World Trade Organization.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) was designed to overturn state and national laws as evidenced by recent rulings. For example, the 1992 GATT ruling declared a whole group of U.S. and state liquor taxes illegal. Michael Carpenter, Attorney General of Maine, wrote a letter to President Clinton protesting the effect of GATT/WTO on state laws.
