NETHERS — Landowners from Nethers to the base of Old Rag Mountain had much to say about overcrowding along this section of Shenandoah National Park at a public forum held here Tuesday afternoon.
More than 30 landowners, tenants and neighbors brought their questions and answers to the tent erected by the Park Service in the “temporary” parking lot on Route 600. The meeting was led by the park’s assistant superintendent, Vaughn Baker.
He explained that the park is in the process of putting together a long-range plan for capital improvements and has decided to add Old Rag Mountain to that plan, as it is “one of the most used areas in the park now.”
Mr. Baker is new to the park this year and admitted he has not yet tried to hike the Ridge Trail on Old Rag during a popular weekend. “I
