A story teller and youth leader, Dunnigan has assisted community neighborhood and 4-H camps, Cub; Scouts, as well as facilitating swimming lessons.
His recent degree in Liberal Studies from Mary Washington College has allowed Dunnigan to fulfill his plans of becoming a teacher.
“I’m very excited to be teaching at Spring Mountain,” says Dunnigan. “I believe that the most innovative side of what some other schools are now doing is what Waldorf has been teaching since the 1920s.”
At Sunbridge, Dunnigan was most impressed by the “Main Lesson Books” longtime Waldorf teachers brought as examples of student writings and illustrations. “You could see for yourself how these students had progressed over the years,” said Dunnigan. “The development of these children reflected the development of all of humanity.”
Kindergarten teacher Maureen Day found herself immersed in a community of Waldorf teachers, anthroposophists, business people, and a few parents, some of whom traveled from as far as Germany and England to the Rudolf Steiner Institute summer program.
“The structure and rhythm of the kindergarten are based on certain ideas,” said Day. “I appreciated the mix of philosophical and theoretical aspects and how they are integrated into practical use.”
One of the courses taken by Day, The Will in the Life of the Young Child, dealt with the development of { the will and how to work with it in the young child. Stages of the will were identified, such as drives and intuition. In guiding each child toward autonomy, educators were reminded of the importance of process and creativity.
Kitty Keller of Sperryville is the new nursery teacher this year. Her son has attended Spring Mountain School for three years, so she said she is very familiar with the Steiner methods of teaching.
