School Superintendent David Gangel presented a $6.3 million dollar budget proposal for next year to the School Board Tuesday night;, up 8.3 percent from the current budget.
The budget requires an additional $615,200 in local funds, an 18.2 percent increase or about 12 cents on the tax rate. For a property valued at $100,000 that would mean an additional $ 120.
There were few surprises in the budget since Dr. Gangel had received approval from the board to include the requests at the February meeting. Some of the increases were less than he had anticipated because they were offset by decreases in other categories, but there was bad news on sources of funding other than from the county.
State aid is projected to be reduced by $10,160, and the federal contribution is budgeted at $37,570 less for next year. Other funds are also projected to be reduced by $83,500, but this includes a reduction of $196,800 because of the end of the RJR/N'abisco grant. The county’s share of the state sales tax is expected to increase by $34,000.
The budget includes a 5 percent increase to the teacher's salary scale, and 3 percent increases for most other staff. Teachers' aides would have a 1 percent increase to their scale, and some would also qualify for step increases. Administrators would also receive a larger percentage increase.
The proposal includes $41,480 to replace the roof over the elementary school gym and cafeteria. Dr. Gangel said
