I was one of seven 6th and 7th grade students selected to represent Rappahannock County Elementary School at the Northwest Regional Odyssey of the Mind competition for middle schools. I would like to take this time to thank our coaches (Ms. Tower, Ms. Rudolph, Ms. James and Ms. Tillinghast) for their support and time they gave us. I would also like to thank those parents and teachers who supported us when the going got rough.
The competition was a worth-' while learning experience. Unfortunately, many obstacles were thrown in our direction by our county school administrators. Halfway through our practices, we were told we could not use power tools (drills, sanders, jig saw) or our paint (toxic). We used hand tools and tempera paint for the rest of our practices.
With two weeks to go before the competition, we were notified by the same administrators, that we could not use our second power source to make the vehicle we built go, a combustion engine. We understood their reasoning on that.
With one week left, l worked at night to rebuild an electric motor that would be powered by a marine battery. 1 completed this engine on the Wednesday before the Saturday competition. Wednesday afternoon, we were once again told we could not use that power either, because of the battery. When questioned, the county school official said the battery could be hooked up wrong and spark. 1 already had it hooked and working.
