Odyssey and Safety

The mail brings two letters this week from those involved with the recent Odyssey of the Mind competition complaining that the school system’s policies made competing more difficult.

One claims that fear of litigation is what motivates the administration. But an injured student would be the reason for such litigation. So it is concern for safety that stands behind these school policies.

An accident, whether or not it became the subject of suit, would be a tragic outcome for such an activity. Certainly an alarming growth in the legal liability business is an unfortunate part of our lives. Common sense needs more support. 1 The Odyssey of the Mind program has great potential. It would be wonderful if more and more students become involved in this creative activity. Students, parents and teachers need to work together qnd with administrators to see that this growth is accompanied by true creativity, not over reliance on high tech solutions and elaborate equipment. ; It is not likely that other winning teams competed with gasoline powered vehicles. We trust the county’s representatives learned there are many ways to power a vehicle. In future years more thought needs to go into establishing sensible rules for safety early tn the process.
