He noted that Routes 642, 729, - 642, 610, and 626 already have over 1,000 cars a day. Routes 621 and 729 are becoming important commuter shortcuts, he said.
He said there may be sections of U.S. 211 between Washington and Sperryville that the county will want to make six lanes wide. His alternatives also included four-laning U.S. 522 between Massie’s Corner and Chester Gap and between Sperryville and the Culpeper County line. Also shown were potential by-passes of Woodville and Flint Hill as well as Sperryville. He said the intersection of U.S. 522 and Route 231 might need to be relocated and the intersection at Massie’s Corner might need “grade separation. That doesn’t mean a clover leaf intersection,” he said. He added it could be a “folded diamond” interchange.
Hampton District representative Mike Massie asked, “Instead of assuming road plans for more and more traffic, what can we do to keep these road counts from growing?” His question was greeted with applause from the audience.

Plans Begin
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Earth Day, and like many communities and cities across the globe, Rappahannock will have its own celebration to mark the occasion.
On Saturday, April 22 following the 17th running of the Fodderstack Race, Earth Day will be the focus of activities at Ben Venue Farm in conjunction wit the Earth Day Kite Fly.
This Friday, March 10 at 4 p.m. at the Ben Venue site there will be an organizational meeting to begin coordinating plans for the Earth Day events. Anyone interested in participating should call 675-1879 at the Ragged Mountain Resource Center or Brenda Van Ness at 987-9527.
