There are thousands of dollars of scholarships waiting for this year’s Rappahannock County High School graduates to help them attend college.

Most are given by local organizations, but the largest is given by an individual, Robert Darby of Woodville.

The Darby scholarship, which can be as large as $1,250 per year for four years, goes to a student planning to major in math, science or engineering. To continue to receive the award a student must have at least a 2.7 grade point average his freshman year and maintain a 3.0 grade point average, during the sophomore and junior years.

Like most of the scholarships this one requires those interested to submit an essay and application. Unlike most it also requires an interview. The scholarship is awarded based on grades, SAT scores and performance during the interview.

The Faith Mountain Company also offers a scholarship that can be good for more than one year. This one can be $ 1,000 a year for two years. Requirements are an essay, application and interview. The scholarship is awarded based on grades, extracurricular activities and SAT scores. Recipients must have a 2.7 grade point average at the end of the first year to get the scholarship for the second year.

The Garden Club awards a onetime award of $1,500. Applications for this scholarship are being taken now. No essay is required, but there is an application and interview. The scholarship is awarded based on counselor recommendation, academic ability, desire to attend college and financial need.

There are two scholarships good for full-tuition for one year at Lord Fairfax Community College. One is given by the college itself and requires an essay and application. The award is based on transcripts and a letter of recommendation. The other is given by Principal John Toth and is
