Dr. Gangel said parents frequently ask for more supervision on buses. Board members Frances Thornton and John Tole said they had heard complaints about that request. Mrs. Thornton said one caller suggested students who don’t behave on the bus, simply should not be allowed to ride.
Dr. Gangel noted that while the schools are not required to provide transportation for regular students who misbehave, they must provide transportation for special education students. Mrs. Thornton said those are not the usual misbehaving students.
Board Chairman Beverly Massie asked for a separate listing that would show expenses to maintain and repair technical equipment. “When it is spread out over several categories, we don’t see the cost of maintaining this technological equipment,” she said. She did suggest, however, that collecting that information could wait until after the budget is sent on to the Board of Supervisors.
Dr. Tole asked for the justification for hiring a school nurse. Dr. Gangel said that there is more and more medicine that must be given to children. Also people not trained in medicine are forced occasionally to deal with medical emergencies.
Mrs. Thornton said most of the need to dispense medicine occurs around lunch time. She said it might be possible to find a nurse part time to handle that chore.
