Planting 500 trees to the acre, the cost of trees and planting labor runs about $60 per acre. Cost share assistance is available to offset a substantial portion of this cost.
Considering the minimal time, money, and effort involved, it is very beneficial to plant abandoned fields in trees. Trees are a great investment, they will benefit the environment in countless ways and one day will provide some of the many products that we demand as a community.
Hardwood plantings are becoming more popular for many reasons; landowners are realizing the greater monetary value of hardwood timber production, still others desire additional benefits to wildlife or to produce brilliant fall colors. Hardwoods are more expensive to establish and will take much longer to mature than pine, but hardwoods give us the ability to plant our forests for a wider variety of objectives.
Planting trees provides other benefits. Besides proving food an nesting cover for song birds and other wildlife, trees improve and protect air and water quality, increase aesthetic and property values and can even help reduce energy costs.
