Praised

To the Editor:

I would like to congratulate the Rappahannock News for being named the best small weekly newspaper in Virginia for 1994. This honor is well deserved.

Sharon Kilpatrick has brought integrity, grit, balance, and expert journalistic sense to her job as Editor, and Cindy Mahan’s articles and photographs are sensitive and artistic. The paper has grown in range and depth since they both assumed their current positions.

I have especially enjoyed the paper’s series on the county’s country stores, its profiles of county citizens and businesses (such as the recent article on the influx of “lone eagles” into the county), its coverage of exhibitions at the Middle Street Gallery, and its coverage of the county’s many other cultural events.

I also appreciate Ms. Kilpatrick’s open door policy for publishing articles by, county residents which have frequently widened my horizons, such as Diana Bird’s ongoing series of articles on visits to Russia. Letting these “guest writers" reach the community in print expands the usefulness of the Rappahannock News as a forum for the county.

Many thanks for the good work of the whole staff at the Rappahannock News.
