Then he said that someone could knock or bother the battery. We offered to put it in a closed wooden box. Then we were told we might drop it, and that the battery could break. The final reason given to us was that our coaches were not qualified to teach us the way to use the battery properly.
If Rappahannock County wants their middle school aged students competing against their peers in competitions like this, maybe some of the restrictions need to be addressed, or maybe the 6th and 7th graders should be allowed to take an industrial arts and home ec class at the high school as other middle schools have those course in their schools.
But even with all those obstacles. The RCES Division II team won third place. Imagine what we could have done, if we had a second power source for our vehicle and we could have used our power tools.

What began as technical problems in preparation for the Odyssey of the Mind Competition last Saturday to build a vehicle that could perform predetermined tasks in a set amount of time, dissolved into what for most of the young students was their first taste of bureaucratic red tape.
