Errant gusts of wind threatened to capsize the sleek sailboats as Cub Scout Pack 123 held their First Annual Raingutter Regatta on May 6.
Preparations for the Regatta began weeks ago when each boy received a kit containing a block of balsa wood, a dowel, a sail, rubber and keel. The scouts were responsible for designing, building and finishing their own regatta entry. Their efforts resulted in a colorful flotilla, with many sails emblazoned with dragons, bears, the skull and cross bones or the captain’s name.
The race course consisted of two close-ended raingutters set side by side atop a pair of sawhorses. Leveled and filled with water these narrow channels proved more challenging than they first appeared. The races Were run in heats with each boy providing the “wind” to fill the sail of his bdat. When the air was calm, the boats sailed smoothly along the gutters — but this was the exception, rather than the rule. Mother Nature
