Ken Carter and Bob Smith are planning the grand opening at their Trading Post Sporting Goods for this Saturday, but in fact they quietly opened two weekends ago.
The store located just west of Washington on the north side of U.S. 522-211 will specialize in goods for archers and black powder shooters. . But they will carry much more. The store will have a full line of casual menswear. There is also some jewelry and watches moved to the Rappahannock store from Mr. Carter’s Hartman’s Jewelers in Warrenton and suncatchers and perfume bottles made by Eric Kvames. Mr. Carter said he has these things in the store “so a man can bring his wife in here, and she will have something to look at.”
Mr. Smith said he and Mr. Carter have been “hunting buddies” for years. They have frequently talked about running a sporting goods store together. “We got the opportunity to get the building, and it went from there,” he said.
Mr. Carter said archery and black powder shooting are not restricted to the hunting season. They are the “fastest growing sports in the U.S.

Recognition
RCES fifth grader Tony Payne received an award for scoring in the top 40 percent in the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth competition. . . To qualify fifth graders had to score at or above the average for eighth and ninth graders on the SATtype test.
. The awards ceremony was held at Episcopal High School in Alexandria.
