New Area Code All telephones in Rappahannock County will be switching to the new 540 area code July 15. From July 15,1995, through Jan. 27, 1996, either 540 or 703 area codes will work for telephones in the 703 area which are to be in the new 540 area. After Jan 27, 1996, only the 540 area code will work for these numbers.
