Incumbent Wakefield District representative Hubert Gilkey said he was proud of the things accomplished in the 16 years he has been on the Board of Supervisors.
He said the county’s zoning ordinance has served to keep the county rural and people in other parts of the state look to Rappahannock for the way to do that. “I think we have the best zoning ordinance in the state,” he said.
He said the schools have improved during his tenure and he feels they are among the best in the state.
He said the landfill, jail addition and dispatch center have been added during those years.
He added that he is available to all the people of the county.
Hampton District representative Mike Massie said the county needs to build on its volunteer base in the future. “We can’t expect the government to do everything for us,” he said.
Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Robert Anderson said, “We’ve tried to run the county’s business the way you would run your own....and to keep Rappahannock the way it is.”
Libby Whetzel said she viewed public education from the points of view of a former teacher, parent and grandparent and volunteer in the literacy program.
“I believe in Biblically based values,” she said. “Children should be encouraged to strive for excellence. It’s the adults’ responsibility to provide a place with an atmosphere conducive to learning.”
Frances Foster said, “It’s been a privilege to serve as the county treasurer. I would like to thank everyone and ask for your support and vote.”
At one point during the afternoon rain drove most people under shelter, and it threatened throughout the evening festivities, but most events went as scheduled.
