They originated on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to explore musical possibilities of the didjeridoo, and instrument native to Australia which creates a constant and colorful bass line. And what have they come up with? A striking variety of familiar folk styles in a fresh setting.
In concert, the five-piece band currently favors traditional music from England, Ireland, Brittany, New Zealand, Australia and the Appalachians, plus a large dose of their own vibrant material.
Accompanying the didjeridoo are mandolin and mandola, trombone and tuba, crumhorn and percussion, sax and musical saw, and an armament of unusual-often hand-made-instruments. Their inventions include the funky diva, the slide-o-didj and the flopohone.
The Country Gentleman have been at the forefront of Bluegrass music since 1957. Led by Charlie Waller’s baritone vocals and guitar playing, this band has had as members such luminaries as Ricky Scaggs, Doyle Lawson, Bill Emerson, Eddie Adcock, Jimmy Gaudreau, John Duffy, Bill Yates and others.
The Country Gentleman continue their great tradition with Waller at lead, joined by Dwight McCall on mandolin and tenor vocals, Guy
Corbett on b^njo and vocals and Ronnie Davis on bass.
