Donna Wine of Chester Gap is making personalized books for upcoming first graders at Rappahannock County Elementary School.
The books are part of a learn to read program, and are designed to get the children interested in reading, hopefully for the rest of their lives. The books will be given to the children free of charge, but sponsors are found to pay for the books. Ms. Wine said that 10 sponsorships at $50 each must be sold to pay for an average class size of 25. There are four first grade classes at RCES.
Tammy Ritenour is the sponsor coordinator and works with Ms. Wine. She makes the contacts, mostly businesses, to sell the sponsorships. The price was originally going to be $75, but when Ms. Wine found out the class sizes were a little smaller than m other schools, she lowered the price to $50. So far, sponsors have been found for one and one-half of the classes. They hope to do books for the first grade class every year, and if enough sponsors are found, for the kindergarten class too.
Both Ms. Wine and Ms. Ritenour are teachers. Ms. Wine teaches fifth grade at Coleman Elementary School in Marshall and has been employed there for 20 years. She said that she loves to read to her students and they love it too. She said she just knows the children at RCES will love the books, expects that parents will get asked to read them over and over again.
