by driving around and going through a pasture owned by Susan Babcock, who lives on the Fodderstack Road. Mr. Marshal! said, “The contractors have to divert the water back into the river before they can start work on the road.”
Other residents on Route 622 in Harris Hollow were finally able to get out by Friday or Saturday, coming out the Harris Hollow way instead of through Gid Brown Hollow.
Gene and Clarissa Leggett, who live near the old trail to Little Devil’s Stairs, had to rebuild their rock driveway. Their bridge, which was built last year, made it through the flood without damage. The first floor of their house was flooded, not from the river, but from water which got into the house from waterfalls which poured down the mountain behind the house, said Mrs. Leggett. “1 know we have it a lot better than a lot of people out here,” she said.
At Pat Davis’s, where the bridge and property were ravaged by the flood, friends came to the rescue with heavy equipment donated by Steve Leake of Blue Ridge Excavating. Steve Critzer, Brian “Smoky” Colbert and Steve Leake worked several days with the equipment to repair the damage.
Extensive damage was done to Route 629 in Bean Hollow. One bridge was replaced with two large culverts instead of being rebuilt. Mr. Marshall said that the road will take a while because of the shape it’s in. “It’s just unbelievable,” he said.
