VDOT
The Virginia Department of Transportation has performed miracles in a very long and tiring week. Starting as soon as flood waters receded, crews were hard at work clearing roads. Recently their work more closely resembled building roads.
Routes 626, 624 and 625 in Harris Hollow, Route 629 in Bean Hollow, and routes 630 and 631 in the Huntly area had to be almost completely rebuilt. In some cases rivers and their feeder streams had to be moved back into their beds from the roads before the road rebuilding could start.
Road construction at this level has required far more than the work of local VDOT employees. Outside contractors have been employed to assist in the effort. Enormous quantities of material had to be brought in to be used in the reconstruction. Truly awesome machines have been trucked into the county to do the work, and in less than a week everyone who had been trapped at home was able to get out. Almost all sections are passable in ordinary cars now.
Citizens of the county owe a debt of gratitude to the many men who worked 12-hour shifts through the week and weekend and into the holiday.
July 4, 1995
^ It has not been easy to get in the mood to celebrate the Fourth of July this year. The devastation of last week’s floods challenged everyone involved.
However, the county rallied and brought off another memorable celebration in the Town of Washington. Untold volunteer hours resulted in successful fund raisers for many county groups, and visitors were once again treated to the best of Rappahannock County.. '• The political oratory stayed on schedule. I It’s a long time from July to November, and many issues need to be more fully discussed. Other forums will provide opportunities for that. From this opening salvo we can conclude only that challengers tend to give longer speeches than incumbents. * Maintaining self government is serious and difficult business. Securing our liberty as Americans has constantly required sacrifice. However, it is good from time to time to take time out and have some fun.
