McCarthy said he understood Warren County had received approval to clean out Gooney Creek under a program that requires the local government to put up 25 percent of the cost.
He said Rappahannock would explore using county funds to match federal funds to clean up the Rush and upper Jordan rivers.
The largest cost to government, Mr. McCarthy reported, was the cost to VDOT for repairing and rebuilding roads, and VDOT will be applying for federal funds to pay for a portion of that cost.
Route 729 continues to be cut at the bridge over Battle Run, VDOT head Ron Marshall reported. In addition the road will be closed for one day next week two miles west of that point to replace a culvert. Also the road will be closed in Culpeper County between routes 628 and 646 for about a week beginning Monday July 17 to replace a drainage pipe.
All of this is causing people to use detours, but no one is unable to get out, Mr. Marshall said. In addition the dead ends of some roads are not yet opened, but no one lives along them, he added.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has located a Disaster Application Center at the Madison County High School for private property owners seeking help. This agency will handle applications for help to rebuild. The center is staffed from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily. The phone number is (703) 9483083. Private.property owners can report damage and apply for relief by calling the center, Mr. McCarthy reported.
