Major Streapy said that in the last two or three weeks the peaches size up and their sugar content rises. He began planting his orchards in 1981 and now has seven acres of peaches and 13 acres of apples, for a total of 2,500 trees. The first crop of 320 red delicious and yellow delicious whips were totally destroyed by deer, he said. Now the new trees are protected from deer by hanging bags of dried blood and by surrounding the tender trees with a metal barrier at the base. He has recently added 25 plum trees, and is always experimenting with new varieties.
