Board Chairman Beverly Massie and Superintendent David Gangel suggested

Board Chairman Beverly Massie and Superintendent David Gangel suggested they take their concerns to the Piedmont School Board.

During the period for public comment on the six-year plan Ellen Manson suggested the high school should offer a program for certified nurse assistants. She said this program can prepare juniors in high school for work that is in great demand. Ellie Clark supported this suggestion.

Mrs. Clark also said the school system needs to offer more challenging classes especially in science for more advanced students.

New elementary school principal Raye Tupper presented the program for Title One for the coming school year. She said that due to cutbacks in federal funding for the program changes had to be made, but she said the changes may offer many long term benefits.

Most of the remedial work will take place in regular classrooms rather than in separate labs. Students will be able to participate in the regular music, art and physical education programs, and most work on remedial reading and math will be covered with team teaching involving both the Title One teachers and aides and the regular classroom teacher.

She said all the alternatives involved serving fewer children. Staff training in team teaching will be an important part of implementing the new progran^ she said. %

Mrs. Tupper also reported that most teachers and parents believe the character virtues curriculum at the elementary school has been helpful and want it continued. Mrs. Biggs reported that English teachers at the high school also seemed pleased with the curriculum there.

In the organizational part of the meeting the board reelected Beverly „ Massie as chairman and Paul Nichols as vice chairman.

Dr. Gangel reported that work cm the septic system at the elementary school is moving along. He said thdt water and toilets are turned off at the elementary school until work is completed and portable toilets have been put in place.
