if you also believe that the Statue of Liberty could use a wart of her nose and a drooping hem on her robe, held up by a pin paid for by the citizens of Rappahannock County, to attract new tourists, it could. Otherwise, no.
Why should a county that is perpetually faced with water supply problems, sewage problems, and school maintenance problems take any action that will hugely increase the demand for water, for sewage disposal, and probably a couple of new school buildings? May I mention the still touchy question of trash disposal? And that the county can not now afford to put air conditioning into the new auditorium in the high school we already have?
And now we should go into debt, too, and “sell, say $1 million worth of tax-free bonds” to people who would like to start a small business here, never mind that there is not, as far as I know, any solid evidence that enterprise zones work the way they are supposed to.
A steady increase in population brought on by the coming in of individuals and famil-ies who are not interested in handouts from the government is what we have, and what we shall probably continue to have, and that’s all to the good.
A tax break here and there to encourage the hiring of local people is also not a bad idea, but for the county to go immediately into debt in order to increase the demand on all of its already inadequate facilities is as dangerous a proposition as I have ever heard.
