Kindergarten students scored 69 in reading and 74.5 in math in the Metropolitan Readiness Test.
At the beginning of the meeting representatives from the fire and rescue squads suggested the fireman training offered at Carver-Piedmont Technical School is not preparing students for work with paid fire and rescue departments or for volunteer work with local squads.
Frank Huff, president of the local Fire and Rescue Association and J.B. Carter, chief of the Amissville department said in the two-year program offered at Piedmont students should be able to pass Firefighter Levels 1 and 2 and get EMT certificates. They said since the instructor at Piedmont is not a certified teacher of EMT, students are only able to get the less demanding Red Cross First Aid instruction and CPR.
Many also do not complete Firefighter Level Two, either, they said.
