Charlotte Taylor is running two or three businesses out of the Crysalis Gallery at the corner of Gay and Porter streets.
In the back is Venture Concepts her business management consulting firm, which specializes in small and medium businesses and particularly in businesses operated by women and minorities. She also offers training sessions on the road and runs a nonprofit offshoot, the Alliance for Women Business Owners.
In the front is Crysalis Gallery, a joint venture with Ruthellen Pollan, an artist who lives and teaches in Utah.
Ms. Taylor said her relationship with Ms. Pollan goes back 20 years when they met at an inn in Maine. Ms. Taylor had just finished writing a book on how to start and business and was “wanting to write more and be more artistic” and Ms. Pollan was working as an artist and wanting to sell more of her work.
In 1986 Ms. Taylor bought a weekend place on the Fodderstack Road in Rappahannock County. Her business in Washington, D.C., was going well and her Rappahannock home was a weekend home for several years.
Ms. Pollan originally from Long Island, N.Y., was teaching at the College qtf Eastern Utah on the edge of the Navaho Nation with most of her students Native Americans.
This summer Ms. Pollan began work at the Maryland Institute of Art on a Masters of Fine Art in painting. She will return to Utah in the fall. Last winter Ms. Taylor decided to rent the space for a gallery' to show Ms. Pollan’s work and see if her hunch was right, that since she was spending about half her time on the road, with fax machines and computers, “I could operate the business out of here as easily as Washington, D.C. I’m not sure of that yet,” she said.
