In September, 1984, Paul Baldwin and his wife Cucie took over his uncle Clarence Baldwin’s grocery which had been in the family for 26 years.
The store has not been closed for even one day since that date, including Christmas and New Year’s Day.
The store’s customers are 99.9 percent local, said Mrs. Baldwin. Because it is off the main highway, on Business Route 211 heading into Washington, the business remains mostly local. The Baldwins’ other store, the 211 Quicke Mart on U.S. 211 next to the Rappahannock Farmers’ Co-op, opened last December, and that store draws in more out-of-towners.
The store was first opened in 1916 and was run by Henry Timbers. According to Mr. Baldwin, the store was the site of a tavern and dance hall in the 1920’s and 30’s, and was
