Williams, who led Rappahannock with two hits, doubled into the woods in right. Alexander and Nils Aylor followed with walks to load the bases. Siers was relieved on the mound by Brian Chicalon, who faced Monarch’s catcher Andy Furr. Furr smashed three consecutive foul line drives, all of which were potential game-tying extra base hits, before grounding to third to end the inning. Both teams went quietly in the ninth to make the final score 4-2.
According to the League rules, when two teams are tied in the standings, the season series is the first tiebreaker. Edinburg and Rappahannock split the season series two games each. The second tie-breaker is run differential in games against each other. Entering the day, Rappahannock was ahead of Edinburg by four runs, which meant that Edinburg needed to beat the Monarchs by at least five runs to take over first place. So, after going ahead by two runs in the eighth inning, Edinburg players were saying that they were “down by three.”
