Beyer said in a Washington Post interview in March that if elected, he would lay the groundwork for a massive increase in state spending to pay for "significant, bold initiatives." Beyer's conclusion rests on his belief that big increases in state spending are better for Virginia families than letting them keep more of their tax dollars.
"It's clear that Don Beyer wants to spend every cent possible to expand the size and influence of state government," said Jim Gilmore. "With responsible spending restraints, we can meet Virginia's needs for the future while letting families keep more of what they earn."
The stark differences in Gilmore's approach to taxes compared with Beyer's is certain to be one the sharpest distinctions between the two candidates this fall. While Gilmore's approach is similar in philosophy to Governor George Allen - Beyer's is more like President Bill Clinton.
