A majority of the dresses were bought by institutions which plan to exhibit them. Very few individuals bought them with the intent of actually wearing them.
The most expensive dress went for $222,500, breaking the record for a garment sold at auction. It is a long, formal dinner dress of ink blue velvet designed by Victor Edelstein and worn by Diana when she danced with John Travolta at the White House. (Coincidentally, the previous record was for John Travolta’s polyester suit in Saturday Night Fever, which sold for $145,500.)
The anonymous woman, who purchased that dress, bought 12 more, spending a total of $670,800. She is an executive in charge of a chain of women’s boutiques in the Southeastern United States.
