A good start * ' The meeting attended by about 36 people at the town hall last Friday evening concei ling what the future for the Town of Washington may hold was constructive.
Residents met, identified and shared concerns for the future of the town. They also discussed potential actions the town might take to achieve its desired future and ways to learn more about the purposes of local planning in Virginia, which were the stated goals of the meeting. There were many good suggestions made for businesses which might flourish here and valid comments about concerns and hopes for the future. From the meeting seemed to come a general consensus that some growth and services are sorely needed in the town. How and where that growth will occur needs to be looked at closely. Obviously the county’s support will be important to the outcome, whatever it may be. However, the issue of adding services, businesses and housing and the issue of how much the town should expand, or needs to expai 1, or fit should expand at all, in order to accomnu date those are two different issues. Citizens will need to examine all the facets of future planning and the consequences for the town before l decision is made. Friday’s meeting was a good start toward that end.
