wrapped merchandise. The “picking ticket” has the name, address, items, bin location of each item and a bar code. The 1200 picking locations are methodically numbered and lettered making it easy to find items on the shelves. Each order is filled in a tote and placed on a gravity flow conveyor belt to the shipping center.

The orders are checked, packed and sent out.

The merchandise department is a large room with rows of tables covered with samples of “new and unique items” the buyers found at shows. Items are arranged on the tables by color and themes similarly to the way they will be advertised in the catalog. This process is called pagination. Each catalog page contains ten items which are a blend of apparel and hardgoods.

Jane Wilson is a designer who photographs and lays out the pages. “It is a fascinating business,” she says.

John Bechtold, a semiretired photographer from New York City and a recent county resident, does the photographing for the final catalog in his Amissville studio. The firm Eddins, Madison and Spitz in Alexandria does the final layout employing digital imaging. The models in the catalog are from a New' York modeling agency.

Holly Lanigan works on producing the catalog. She said the final proof for the holiday catalog will be ready next week and will come out in September.

Mr. Eastham said Faith Mountain people set a high standard from themselves.

Jan Lynn Dodson, a native Rappahannock resident, was recently promoted to customer service supervisor. She said she likes working for Faith Mountain, enjoys driving only seven miles to work and appreciates the benefits the company offers.

Faith Mountain is the second largest employer in the county with 92 employees (the school system being the largest) and 75 percent of the employees are county residents. The company plans to hire about 40 new employees in August.
