leaves where their green coloration provides camouflage. Why were my two sightings of lima moths in such exposed and open situations? I suspect they had emerged from a cocoon the day before and were attracted to bright lights around the building. I am mighty glad they were where I could see them so unexpectedly- lyOne
knows them as moths by their feathery antennae; butterflies are day-flying and have antennae with a knob at the tip. Like other giant silk moths, luna moths do not feed as adults, and their place in the sun is brief, just long enough to find a mate and lay eggs.
The female may lay as many as 200 pure white eggs, fastened with a kind of moth cement to twigs and the upper surface of leaves.
From these eggs emerge hungry caterpillars to eat the leaves of trees: oaks, hickories and birch. The caterpillar is pale green like the adult. The cocoon is spun in the leaf mold on the wood’s floor.
From this emerges the ephemeral adult.
Since there are two broods a season we can expect another crop of adults in August. That’s a pleasant anticipation; another reason to visit the Rappahannock Library and The Blue Peach in The Plains.
