so she gave up gardening and keeping chickens.
She lived in Europe from 1981 to 1987 and became aware of art history, especially the French Impressionists Monet and Cezanne. Seeing the museums and taking classes affected her painting, inspiring her to paint with more vivid colors and awareness of form.
Her paintings were well received in Europe and gave her the confidence to open a gallery in Washington and later in Sperryville.
Richey recently sold her Orlean home of 21 years and moved into the apartment above her shop, Tanya Richey Studio, on Sept. 21. Five days later, 300 guests and 1,000 visitors stopped by for the opening. The next time she moves it will be with a suitcase, she joked.
She likes being in town where she enjoys the company of the other shopkeepers and artists. It is a pleasant balance to the solitary, creative side of her life, she said.
The studio has a warmth unusual in a gallery, with comfortable sofas and chairs one can lounge in while looking at her large painting of Old Rag with its luminous and iridescent sky. Cezanne had his Mt. Sainte-Victoire and I have my Old Rag, she said. And she paints many local landmarks.
Mrs. Coxe’s Tavern displays a historical painting Richey did of the tavern inspired from old photographs. She added owner Fran Eldred’s cat and a stagecoach headed west to Missouri.
