Buttermilk Icing 1 teaspoon soda 1 cup buttermilk 2 cups sugar 3/4 cup butter 1 teaspoon vanilla Stir soda into buttermilk; combine all ingredients except vanilla in saucepan. Cook until icing forms soft ball; cool, add vanilla, beat slightly. Spread over side and top of cake. Note: Frances said this recipe makes a lot of icing. She uses only half of recipe.
