Gary Rafala, former director and health therapist at the Family Guidance Center in Washington, Va. for 10 years, has moved to the Rafala Professional Counseling Services in Culpeper. “It is time for a change and new challenges,” he said. He joined his wife, Cynthia, who has been practicing there for six years.
Bob Treanor, mental health/substance abuse counselor who worked with Rafala said he was an “excellent therapist who always maintained his composure in stressful situations and who was a good team player. He was flexible and had a lot of skills and strategies in different situations.
“He was a good man to work with,” Treanor added.
Janet Bessmer, acting director of the Family Guidance Center, praised Rafala for being friendly, outgoing and comfortable to be with. He was skilled at getting to know the community and its needs, she said.
Patti Lanning, administrative assistant at the center, noted Rafala’s ability to make the community aware of the Family Guidance Center’s role and how he could mediate between the main office, the community and the staff. “He was good at getting things to work and I hate to see him go,”
