Last 'week, in addition to drawing the candy bars, they used charcoal to draw a still life of fruit and several objects. For each class they take and each technique they explore Dodd provides a demonstration on how to use the medium chosen. She provides instruction individually as they work.
The instruction is geared individually because they all, as do adults, perceive things differently and have different ideas about how they want their work to turn out. Some strive for realism while others tend to experiment more lavishly with the techniques they are using.
“You’re doing this for yourself,” Dodd tells them. “You’re doing this to please yourself not anyone else. TVy variations and don’t be afraid to experiment.”
Several of the children work quickly and others, such as Rappahannock’s Julia Baumgardner, prefer to take a little more time and strive more toward a finished product.
Each approach is different but their total absorption in their work is the same. Their minds were filled with ideas and images being brought to life by their hands.
When they finished their charcoal sketches they critiqued their own work. All of them liked some parts of their work and disliked others.
