There were five of them (all kids) in the moderately sized studio. They were completely absorbed, busily creating, quiet and they remained that way for two and a half hours.
They are participants in the youth art class currently in progress at Shimmering Meadows Farm Studio in Slate Mills and being taught by Kitty Dodd.
Dodd, a well known area artist, who has exhibited at the Middle Street Gallery here, is the artistic director at St. Luke’s School in Culpeper. She is also a woman who loves teaching and working with children and pulls amazing results out their artistic endeavors.
“My father told me, and he was right, that you learn more from children (as an art instructor and artist). They do teach you and that’s why I do it (teach them). When you challenge them they will find ways to do things that adults normally wouldn’t think of.”
Last week her students were drawing Baby Ruth wrappers and studying lines and contours that make up objects. They worked steadily and were rewarded for their efforts with the candy bars inside the wrappers when break time came around.
Dodd h&s also had them draw fruit but not in the traditional way. During a previous class they each drew an apple, then were allowed to take a bite
