Rafala, born and raised in Southington, Conn., attended St. . Thomas Seminary in Hartford, Conn, with plans of becoming a Catholic priest. He transferred to the University of Hartford and earned a B.S. degree in philosophy and a masters degree in counseling. He also earned a post-masters degree as an education specialist. He is a licensed professional counselor and is a state licensed marriage and family therapist.

Rafala, 37, met Cynthia in 1984 when he attended the wedding of a friend in Roanoke. He caught the bride’s garter and she caught the bouquet, so according to tradition they shared a dance.
